I am a medical doctor in India, the country which has been producing the maximum amount of food grain in the world in the year. India has emerged as a food donor country from food importer country. There is political, social and economic awareness about agri-business. As a culturally diverse country, India has diverse kind of regional foods, varied eating habits and is perhaps the world's largest consumer of spices! Being one of the one billion mouths taking in this food every day, I am fortunate to be placed in a unique situation to add my understanding of nutrition, to talk to people, getting their ideas and also contributing some delicacies to the site!
Food is life. It is one of the most direct things we associate ourselves to. Right from the beginning of life, food has been an important aim to live and earn, which later got transformed into a means of entertaining the tongue as civilizations progressed. There are countries which are undergoing "nutrition contradiction" sort of, which have underweight children and overweight adults – another unique identity only food and nutrition knowledge can provide!
It would be very interesting to note this, that food is life but the same diet if uncontrolled can lead to early death as evident by trends of patients with heart diseases exclusively due to food in some of the countries.
Several things are possible with FOOD....
To save lives in refugee and other emergency situations;
To improve the nutrition and quality of life of the most vulnerable people atcritical times in their lives;
To help build assets and promote the self-reliance of poor people andcommunities, particularly through labor-intensive works programmes;
To savor life by sipping a cappuccino on an icy cold day!
