Listening to Youth Printable Version PRINTABLE VERSION
by Erick Ochieng Otieno, Kenya Oct 16, 2006
Media , Environment   Opinions

It is true that most youths do not know most of the Millennium Development Goals, and it also true that most who know them have not have the opportunity to showcase what they have done or what they can do to achieve these goals. The question that keep on haunting most youth is how they can get to their audiences and inspire other youths to join in the fight to achieve these goals.
As an individual, I can proudly say that I have been trying my level best with my little resources to try and promote awareness to these goals by giving these youth organizations a chance to be heard. This I do in a very simple way by covering their activities and producing for them videos that they can use to market their wonderful ideas. This I have done in promoting the environmental awareness by organizing tree planting events in collaboration with other organizations such as Kenya Wildlife Services, and other clean up events in Nakuru and its environs. Various youth organizations in Nairobi have also had the opportunity to organize environmental clean up events where I have given them covarage. Such group includes the Githurai Youth Group. I believe that it is only by helping the world understand the youths role, and the youth also to understand their roles in the fight to achieve these MDGs will we be able to go a step forward in the right direction. This can not happen if we do not eradicate ignorance among the youth.
Let us, therefore promote the other youth by increasing awareness of their activities. This will not only inspire others to join, but also go a great deal to encouraging those participating in these activities to go on knowing that someone somewhere is appreciating their work.

Writer Profile
Erick Ochieng Otieno

I was a student from Egerton University. I pursued a course leading to a BSc in Applied Aquatic Sciences. I believe that through writing, one can relieve a lot from the heart. Inspiration came from hearing and reading. Whoever said that you have to be an old one to communicate issues of policies, did not consider that even a newborn communicates through its own way, "crying". I would like to communicate to the world all my thoughts; However minor they are, I believe they will go a great length to straighten or strengthen a policy or two somewhere and I shall have contributed to the well being of the world. How noble that is, it is for my worthy readers to let me know. So what do you think? Tell me anytime. Bye and have a nice reading.

Ignorance or ...?
Mbũrũ Kamau | Oct 19th, 2006
The youth are branded ignorant and hot-blooded, but is it so? The vast number of the youth would rather wait for manna to fall from heaven instead of using their ideas and will-powerto get what is rightfully theirs - not to bargain as though they have no role to play in shaping the national cake. Let's inform the ignaorant of the MDGs and see what will happen! Bravo
