What They Should Know And Consider In Ensuring Environmental Sustainability |
PRINTABLE VERSION |
This is my opinion and suggestions to Schools and organisations involved in Environmental Education Who wish to ensure long term Environmental Sustainability.
Most of the issues address here are been incorporated into the activities of the Millennium Youth Foundation an organisation that i work for.
The purpose of environmental education should not just make students aware of the natural world and the environmental issues that will later be a part of their life, but should rather encourage a particular sensitivity and attitude towards environmental issues. Students should be encouraged to and supported in developing their on views on how to best protect and conserve the environment.
The schools and organisations are responsible for shaping the minds of today’s youth into tomorrow’s leaders.
Making students/youth aware of the environmental problems that we face and encouraging them in developing caring attitudes towards the environment, developing ecologically conscious and sensitive members of society is exactly what environmental education should strive to.
It should also strive to teach students about the environmental threats to the natural world and how their actions and choices affect and are effected by what their action. Finally, environmental education should been seen as a catalyst in showing students/youth what they can do to make a difference and motivating them to act now and in the future.
What You Should Consider When Developing a Sustainable Environmental education project/curriculum.
Institutions and Organisations should be aware of the dangers and taboos associated with educational indoctrination. They should therefore design their goals, principles, and objectives of environmental education in a way that would calibrate changing the values and feelings of students to improve and protect the environment.
What the Mission should aim at:
To use environmental education as a "window" to increase students' understanding of our environment; stimulate students' critical and creative thinking; develop students' ability to make informed decisions on environmental issues; and instill in students the commitment to take responsible and the right action in protecting the environment.
