From a Biblical view, a parable is an earthly story with a heavenly meaning. The word parable is used to describe the teaching of the kingdom of heaven to Christians. Jesus told the parable of the sower, mentioned in St. Matthew chapter 13 in the Holy Bible, as he sat on a ship near the seaside with His disciples and a great multitude of people. The uniqueness of this parable is that Jesus categorizes every Christian believer and nonbeliever who hears the word of God (the seed) and how it is manifested in his or her lives.
The parable of the sower, Jesus described how a sower went forth to sow his seed and due to various elements of the world, many did not produce favorably or not at all from a spiritual point of view. Some of the seeds fell by the wayside, stony places, and among thorns. The seeds that fell on good grounds brought forth fruits (blessings) numbering a hundredfold, some sixty, and some thirty. After speaking this parable, He admonished those who had ears to hear, let them hear.
The question was then asked by his disciples as to why speak to the people in parables? Jesus then answered them, saying that because it is given unto you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given. Also whosoever has, to him shall be given, and he shall have more in abundance, but who do not have, from him shall be taken that what he has. “Therefore speak me to them in parable: because they seeing see not; and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand. And in them is fulfilled the prophecy of Esaias, which saith, by hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and not perceive:” Jesus further stated that this is the reason that people’s heart are waxed gross, their ears dull of hearing and their eyes they have closed.
As seen in days past and in the world today, Jesus further stated that until the people see with their eyes, hear with their ears and understand with their hearts and turn from their ways, then He can heal them. As true believers in Christ Jesus, we are blessed with eyes to see and ears to hear. Jesus said that many earlier prophets and righteous men have desired to see the things that we have seen but did not see what we have seen nor have they heard what we have heard. Therefore, He admonishes us to hear the parable of the sower.
Jesus explain the parable of the sower by saying that when anyone heard the word of the kingdom of God and did not understand it, the wicked one (Satan) then came and caught that which was sown in his heart. This is the one, which received the seed by the way side. The one that receives the seed in stony places is one who hears the word, and anon (now and then), receives it with joy. However, because he does not have root in himself, he endures for a while and when tribulation or persecution arises because of the word, time after time he is offended. The one who receives the seed among thorns is one that hears the word but because of the cares of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, choked the word, and therefore he became unfruitful. The one who received the seed into good ground is he that heard the word and understood it. He also bear fruit, and brought forth some a hundredfold, some sixty, and some thirty.
As one can see today, the manifestation of this parable can be seen in people all over the world where the word of God is heard. But the question still remains as to how can one bring forth good fruits? James chapter 1 verses 21-25 states, “Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls. But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. For if any be a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was. But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.”
After reading the above contents, the seed, (which is the word of God) having been planted into your hearts, with biblical references to compliment it: where has the seed fallen in your daily life living? Though it is the intention of every sower that all of his seed bring forth fruit, it does not always happen. The same also holds true with the children of God as seen in Second Peter chapter 3 verse 9, “The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness; but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.”
To you, who find this article confusing to understand, remember it is a parable, and Jesus did say it is not given to all to know and understand the mystery of the kingdom of heaven. God bless you all.
