Emily Barnby in her essay “Theriault as a Union of Marxism and Taylorism” talks about the fundamental difference between Marx and Taylor. It is the internalized integration and the adaptability of modification in responding to changing times, cultures, etc. of workers. Marxism gives authorship to working class which supports the ontological argument, whereas Taylor must make a scientific practice of any modification. It eliminates any personal creative ideas or techniques that may exist in workers because it gives credit to management and “science”.
There are some loop holes in task management like “deskilling” as jobs are broken down their (workers) cognitive input is not required and it makes them machines. Workers become highly specialized therefore hindering their adaptability to new situations. The motivation of the worker dies. Taylor talks about money incentive to workers but it has been recognized that productivity and success is not just obtained by controlling all factors in the work place, but by contributing to the social well-being and development of the individual employee.
Taylor left an indelible mark on the history of organizational management. The influence of The Principles of Scientific Management “went far beyond the industrial world itself”. After reading his book I feel that he is an inspirational and tenacious leader who orchestrated change by the strength of his intellect and vision.
