I Relate, Therefore I’m an African Printable Version PRINTABLE VERSION
by Nonnoz, Namibia May 18, 2006
Human Rights   Poetry

I relate, therefore I’m an African

I relate to the oddness of not carrying an African name
and the confusion of who I am…so ashamed
I relate in carrying the identity of a once colonial master
and being called a bastard

I relate, therefore I’m an African

I relate being discriminated against because of the colour of my skin
and the disregard as a bona-fide human being

I relate, therefore I’m an African

I relate going through western style schooling
and a culture being dominated and changed like drooling

I relate, therefore I’m an African

I relate to the transition from colonialism to liberation and independence
and the process of decolonising even long after independence
I relate to the discrimination in the economic field, due to colour
and the economic mess we find ourselves in

I relate, therefore I’m an African

I relate to being landless
and intimidated by the iron fist of imperialism
I relate to the gap between rich and poor
and being labeled a promiscuous social outcast who lacks morality

I relate, therefore I’m an African

I relate to a people without proper health care
and questions of whether it’s fair
I relate to hostility, violence, poverty and exploitation
and events, too troubling to dismiss

I relate, therefore I’m an African

Writer Profile
Nonnoz

Through writing I express my dreams, desires and dysfunctions. Just about everything that has meaning to me.
My writing was never without a purpose, just as my life and my contribution to life. I strongly believe I become a better person through the collective contribution of every person in this world.
