NCOM appeals to mining companies to stop the violence. It asks that the state carry out a public investigation into cases of violence against communities, and requests that state military refrain from policing mining projects. It recommends that the police be held accountable for their actions in accordance with their own rules, and that laws governing private security be vigorously enforced. Finally, NCOM demands that mining companies respect the right of local communities, and that the state commit itself to its proper role as protector of the citizenry.
NCOM, a network of NGOs including Third World Network-Africa (TWN), Civic Response, ABANTU for Development, the Integrated Social Development Centre (ISODEC), the Centre for Public Interest Law (CEPIL), the Wassa Association of Communities Affected by Mining (WACAM), and a handful of others, believe if their demands are met, sanity will finally prevail in the mining business.
