I awoke in my home
That currently houses 5
It could house more than 10
Who are in greater need than I
I walked to the sink to brush my teeth
I watched the water run down the drain
It could have quenched the thirst
Of someone thirstier than me
I opened up the cupboard
To get the cereal for breakfast
This could have sustained someone
Who’s just to starved to last
I took a shower
Something I do for my health
It could have cleaned up someone
Far dirtier than myself
I packed up my school supplies
To better myself through learning
They could have helped those
Who look through the classroom window,
Yearning
I rode the bus to school
To go faster toward education
It could have carried those
Walking miles to a much worse destination
I went through the day
In a care free manner
Nothing standing in my way
No cursing, pain or demeaning slander
I went to see the nurse
For a hand I bruised, falling to the ground
Better than the grave
Because there was no hospital around
For a cold I had
I took some Tylenol
Better than contracting AIDS
For which there’s no medicine at all
I told a mean joke
About the president’s choice
No police came to get me
And stifle my voice
There was a fight between two boys
But the whole town did not take sides
There were no guns, just a few yells
It did not swell to genocide
My life is real good
I haven’t god it bad
There are so many more who should
Be glad for what they have
