Nevertheless, government has to be commended for establishing fifty voluntary counseling centers up to date, buttressed in this tireless effort by Population Services International (PSI) Zimbabwe which provides youth-friendly services and outreach activities in both urban and rural communities. It also runs Profam, which is a Professional Family Planning Services Project started by PSI Zimbabwe in 1997. However, because of setbacks like the United States Global Gag Rule, adolescent reproductive health programmes are limited in terms of meeting the reproductive health needs of the country’s high population of young people entirely. In fact, sanctions have crippled the nation’s ability to prioritise a lot of critical development programmes, which are linked to the health of its population.
Yet if the voice of Zimbabwean youth were to be nurtured to the fullest extent of maturity, it would ricochet in all the corners of the continent and beyond, and help not only to lift Zimbabwean youth out of the HIV & AIDS quagmire they find themselves in, but also provide a comprehensive case study for global responses to the challenges of youth all over the world.
