A layman's perspective from The Bahamas on the Free Trade Areas of the Americas (FTAA) agreement |
PRINTABLE VERSION |
The Free Trade Areas of the Americas' concept is a good one, but due to the many existing concerns of a significant amount of nations and peoples involve in the discussions- a workable formula appears distant. Indeed, we do need solutions to the economic problems facing a lot of countries in the Americas; reducing unemployment, poverty and the cost of imports are vital to a healthy and sustainable trade pact between the nations concerned. But, let's not forget the vital factor, and that is- getting the citizens of the region onboard the ship of discussions. In that way, a workable deal would be more forthcoming and the levels of anxiety and uncertainty reduce to an acceptable degree.

I don't know much about the Bahamas, but I'm sure that until Cuba gets "a regime change" we (US) will not get into any agreement making trade easier with them. I don't condone Castro at all, and to some degree their isolationist tendencies are results of their own choosing, but the US' stubborness is a major factor.
