The doctor had explained to her that what her son had was a viral infection and it would be pointless to prescribe antibiotics for her son because such viral infections go away in a week or two, and that the boy will be just fine. Yet all the doctor's explanations coupled with the fact that she is a nurse and knows what over-use of antibiotics does to one's immune defense did not make her feel better. The satisfying answer lies in that cultural thinking that once the boy gets antibiotics, he will be fine. The boy will eventually get fine because his ailment does not require any medication but if one did not know this, will just keep on believing that the antibiotics has done a wonderful job.

This is exactly how powerful this phenomenon called self-medication is. I compare it to an addiction because it is just the mind playing games with the individual and it has been playing African minds.
Take this fact with you please, but bear in mind that I am not a doctor nor am I a pharmacist yet. From the little I have learnt in my PrePharmacy studies and from my extensive reading of real life cases like this; I know for a fact that everything that is called medicine or drugs, comes with a side effects.

Please do not take any medication even if it was given to you by your pharmacist without first knowing and understanding that drug's side effects. Make the decision for yourself if the side effect is something you can live with or not. For example, I saw a commercial on TV about a contraceptive patch that one just sticks on the body part for a long period of time instead of taking the pills daily. It sounded wonderful to me because you don't have to keep remembering or forgetting to swallow the pills daily, until the side effects part came up. The commercial usually runs faster at this part, it is almost like they do not want you to see or hear about them. I took my time to research the product and by the time I was done, I decided that I can actually live better with a child than some of the things listed on that particular patch’s side effects.

My gospel to you as we enter 2006 is that self-medication is more than dangerous it is lethal. Please think about that the next time you or someone you know gets sick.
