Terrorism must be stopped. It's a commitment that has become a first priority since the September 11 attacks. Let us fight this war on terror with the vigour that can come from having a new revelation. Let us play God and decide whose lives we want to affect, including our very own. On the day of the one year anniversary of the attacks, programs commemorating that fateful day flooded the international TV programming. Moments of silence were held, which were done so with great and sincere sorrow. But in the meanwhile, many couldn't help but wonder where the moments of silence for the others outside the USA were. Before, during, and after the attacks, humanity around the world has always been suffering from conflict of various kinds in astronomically bigger numbers than the 3000 that were killed in New York. Whether it is from starvation, genocide, abuse of human rights or poverty, this has been going on since the beginning of recorded history, where, true to our animal instincts, we have followed by the doctrine 'Only the fittest survive'.
Where was the major coverage on that before September 11? People experience "terrorism" on many different levels... the kind that goes against the fundamentals of human rights. Not just the conventional view and yet we focus this war on "terror" on abstract groups that are difficult to weed out, neglecting the other more subtle, yet more damaging conflict experience by millions every single day. Is it disturbing that such a tragic and politically threatening event as the September 11 attack had to be brought about in order for people to become more aware of what was going on in the world?
Terrorism is the new catch word. I could have sworn that in Europe, I heard on such a repeated basis that the word no longer held any meaning. I could have hit my little brother and I would have been accused of being a terrorist. Governments have lost sight of the "terrorism" experienced by people all around the world every single day in order to focus on something that holds less weight to the common everyday human being.
It's sad to think that terrorism as we generally see it has become over-rated, leaving the lesser known daily conflicts of hunger, abuse of human rights and poverty seen all around us to become the under-rated dogs that are constantly growing.
It is only with education; funding and true commitment from people on all sides will the eradication of the previously mentioned daily conflicts can come about. It's only with eradication of this conflict that terrorism will be resolved. Rather than finding a short-term less effective program where you go down to the level of the accused and become like the accused yourself, why not raise your status and show true leadership by tackling the problem at its root with dignity, integrity and respect?
