The Return of the Generals Printable Version PRINTABLE VERSION

In our political setting we have people that are obstacles to a perfect democratic government and these people are the product of military eras we have experienced. A real civilian president would not want to become an obstacle to a perfect democracy. Pitifully our barracks have become a nourishing ground for future dictators who are ready to take over the seat of power whenever chaos in the government arises.

Now when they are appropriate to hold the scepter for a short or long period they step aside for a democratic government which they have attached themselves to (but in disguise) – they are the "Democracy Destroyers." These set of people always have enormous greed for power. If you observe the present affairs of this country, it is a military affair as the soldiers who had the opportunity to rule this country have all swam into the ocean of democracy in their continuous search for power. Corruption is not and will never be of the past, at least not until the government is transformed and not reformed.

2007 is fast approaching, a period when corruption hands over to corruption. Yes! You can crucify me; this country can never taste progress until a revolution takes place.

If we want to progress, than our retired generals should not be allowed to contest for an elective post. These men are the authors but not the finishers of our problems. There are no two ways about it, when a civilian heads a government you will see a difference. A democratic government seeks peace where there is turmoil and does not uphold war in their country, e.g. the Anambra State crises. A democratic leader follows the rules and constitutions of his party and country and does not pose as a terrorist. A democratic leader considers a debt relief when reasonable negotiations have been made and does not accept debt relief because his godfather has advised him to do so. A democratic leader executes bills passed by the legislature and does not interfere with the internal affairs of the House. A democratic leader encourages employment opportunities and not guerilla opportunities. A democratic leader stands for the truth and not against the truth. A democratic leader should not be afraid to declare his assets to the public when he is called upon to do so and does not run a government of hidden agenda. A democratic leader should make an all-round visit to all the states of the federation and not a partial visit to some states. A democratic leader does not take problems for granted but devises solutions for them. A democratic leader should not be autocratic but considerate.

I see an oath of office as a formality. This exercise has become stupid and senseless especially when it is ended with this statement so help me God. The God that I know and serve will never make a way for corruption and fraud. It would be better and more acceptable in our present situation if these oaths ended with the statement so help me god-father. I think it makes some sense-so that we will never forget that there are god-fathers who are the brains behind the incessant corruptions in our society.

I will end my article with these final thoughts - for those of us who still believe in the promises made by our politicians, go and study the constitutions and manifestos of the past and present political parties. You will agree with me that our society is based on pure fallacy and dishonesty. This attitude will continue unless we experience a revolution in Nigeria.

Yes Revolution!
