Wow, that’s a lotta work, you may think. But even though our brains worked literary 16 hours each day, we all managed to retain enthusiasm throughout the whole week and stayed up late to do the assigned tasks daily (who said there’s no school in summer?). This didn’t prevent us, however, from doing nightly trips to the heart of the city in search for a good European club (which eventually turned a success the very last night of our stay in Hungary) and sleeping a total of 16 hours over 5 days. And – of course – we did have an exciting walking tour of the city, enjoying the magnificent views of Buda, Pest, and the Danube at sunset and scaring butterflies out of decent Hungarian citizens with our immeasurable outbursts of delight.
Looking back I can sure say being on the Board of the Future gave a lot to me. I met wonderful people who are recognized youth leaders in their countries, and started (hopefully) long-lasting friendships. I took a moment during each of those five days to reflect on what technology actually means to me, and how different my life would be if I had no computer, no Internet connection, no cell phone, no camera, no smart home appliances… But I also took a moment to reflect on what technology took over in my life and was shocked to realize I was talking about that via an IM to a person sitting in the same room with me, just at the other end of the table.
I am still not sure what the ideal working environment should be like for me in the future. But it definitely will be a workplace where technology enhances communication rather than replaces it.
