Poverty   Short Stories

I am from a village called Baity Bacar, in the region of Thies in Senegal. I began school in Baity Dakhar in 1984 and spent there five years before I left for Tivaouane where I completed secondary school. In 1998, I entered the University of Dakar. After five years I got my M.A degree and I am now a teacher trainee at the University of Dakar.

I have a strong sensitivity to people’s living conditions. I believe that my life-time mission is to mobilize all my strength and energy to fight poverty. This is what led me into founding what I call a real poverty-reduction organization on February 17, 2004. The members of my organization are mainly inhabitants of three villages (Baity, Bacar, Baity Dakhar and Mbenguene) located in the Region of Thies (Senegal) and exactly in the Rural Area of Notto Gonge Diama. These three villages have at least two thousand people. The main activities are agriculture, breeding and commerce. The villages are still very traditional ones in that they have no good road, electricity, phone line, nor any public or private health center.

The association was then created as a response to this desperate situation. Our main actions are oriented towards education and health because we strongly believe that health and education are the foundations of development. Despite the lack of means, the association, so far, has managed to do some good actions. First of all, we have succeeded in gathering the inhabitants of those villages around the organization’s headquarters where they meet to discuss and make decisions concerning their own living conditions. Within a short amount of time, some good things were achieved, thanks to the determination of our members. During the rainy seasons, for instance, we bought some mosquito nets. We sold them on credit to members who badly needed them in order to avoid diseases such as malaria. We also managed to organize at least five cleaning operations in public places (schools, markets etc.) in order to secure a healthier environment, where people can live in a sustainable way.

Before that, we organized summer courses for the youth of the village. We are continuing our program by organizing a Medical Day on April 16th, 2005 in Baity. On that day, we will be inviting qualified doctors from Dakar to consult the villagers. We are currently trying to mobilize drugs which doctors will be distributing for free. Our aim is to continue the same actions in order to help the people of Baity secure better living conditions for themselves and their children.
