When You Hear the Word When you hear the word "Islam"
What do you envision?
When you hear the word "Muslim"
What do you imagine?
When you hear of muslim women
Do you think of oppression?
I am a Muslim
I am a Woman
I am neither deprived or opressed
And am not seeking any form of liberation
From any region especially the West
This is a particular messege
For the entire world to hear
A testimonial about the Hijab
That I want to make clear
It is not a sign of deprivation
Nor is it a type of trap
Instead it's an empowerment
An ability to escape
Those standards set for my gender
To show off our body shape
And curvy figure
Occupied with trying to please everyone
Obligation to keep up with the latest fashion
Able to avoid competition in this society
of clothing, hair, make-up, and jewelry
Am capable to break away from
the stereotype set for women
When I cover
then they are able to hear
My personal opinions
and brave voice
My valid options
and personal choice
When I cover
I express my individuality
While maintaining my dignity
Preserving and adorning my body
Protection from the sun rays
and those immoral eyes
When I cover
I am always reminded that a stranger
is attracted by my tranqulity
and bold personality
instead of my sexualiy
and physical beauty
Rather turn heads
for more clothes worn
then the lack of it instead
for others to adorn
Hope you now understand
We are already liberated and free
More than any can comprehend
So have no sympathy
I am a Muslim
I am a Woman
I live a life that is virtouse and pure
I form an intellectual mind
And a strong character
So remember next time
You hear Islam, Muslim, and Muslim Women
Think of knowledge, chaste, and admiration

Zied MHIRSI | Mar 8th, 2005
great peom and very personnal one !! what about the other girls who want to to keep up with the latest fashion to compete in this society of clothing, hair, make-up, and jewelry!! and who cannot do it because of chariaa laws!!!

Thanx for yoour commenst all
Rarest Of The Rare | Mar 10th, 2005
I really do appreciate the support. Yea, Rana, people need to start listening to us instead of having those who don't wear Hijab "explain" how we feel.

Chariaa Laws?
Rarest Of The Rare | Mar 10th, 2005
I am unfamiliar with Chariaa laws, are they similar to Shias? Well anyway, to answer your question, let me first make something clear, the Islamic dress code on women, the Hijab {a covering from head to ankle leaving the face, hands and feet visible in public} is a choice only a woman can make for herself. And is a choice we make proudly for ourselves. There are many women who do want to wear teh Hijab but don't because they don't have teh strength to fight society. And then there are those who wants to fit in with society and wear the clothing, hair, make-up and jewelry that comes with it and that is a choice they made out of thier own free will just how I made my choice out of my own free will. We all choose which path we take in life and no one should tell us how to live and how to be. So if there is a group who within it are forcing covering on women and taking away thier rights, then that isn't right. And isn't supported by Islam and is actually against Islam. Hope I ansewered your question. Do reply and check out my update section as well concerning this topic and others. Take care, and thanx for ur post.

Don't reject your feminity.
Margarita | Mar 11th, 2005
You are right. You are a person and the fact of being a woman must not charactirize all of our actions. However, it is extreme to try to hide your feminine side. Being a woman, is a part of your identity just like being a muslim. Just like you embrace the fact of being a muslim, you reject another great part of you. Wearing the Hijab is like rejecting a great gift of the nature. Why don't muslim men wear the Hijab? In this way we want be distracted by their masculine side. Correct? Yes you are a muslim! ...but you are also a woman.

Rejecting My Feminine Side
Rarest Of The Rare | Mar 11th, 2005
Wearing the Hijab is in no way related to rejecting your feminity. We don't hide, we don't suppress instead we cover and protect. Yes I do have a physical manifestation upon this earth. But it is the vessel of my strong mind and character which should be noticed and praised. Only the dearest ppl in my life know me with out my Hijab. Because they love me enough to value all of me. Tom, Dick and Harry don't love me or care for me. So why must I meet their preconceived notion of what a woman is? And why does covering my body mean that I am hiding my feminity? Why is it that it makes a "woman" to show off her body? Well for me, I choose to cover and protect mine. My body is my body. It's just a simple part of me. Contrary to public opinion, many feel that we r embarrassed by our body but that can be no further from the truth. A woman is not a person with the best fashion trend and the one with the most outer beauty. A woman is someone who is strong, who respects herself, who can carry a lot with her, who can raise her children, who has that strength to hold a family together, the one with the power to voice her opinion and let herself be heard, a woman who fights the destruction on this earth and has the courage to defy those standards. And the list goes on. And feminity is something that comes with us, part of our nature; it is the sensitivity to nurture and to care. Not wearing make-up and high heel shoes. And men do wear the Hijab. But it is not like ours. Their required covering is from the belly button the bottom of their knees. Women are the better looking of both sexes. Also, men have a hard time controlling their hormones. And if anyone denies this, they are just choosing to be oblivious of the facts. Hope I answered your questions. Do reply when u can, take acre. I really appreciate your comment and concern.

Rarest Of The Rare | Mar 11th, 2005
I think the difference of view here is the fact that we both have different views on what Feminine is. The dictionary wasn't any help, just referred it as something pertaining to women. You stated that feminity is associated with ones body and physical appearance while I feel it is more of an inner beauty and a certain kind of love we have within us. A kind of life that God has created us with that makes us more sensitive in order to possibly be more caring to our children and see the world in a different view then that of Men. This is one reason why we need both Women and Men running this world in order to keep it running properly. Our difference of opinion is also like how some women are for abortion and some are against it. Some women feel that a baby is e a growing peace of blood clot in our uterus while I feel that it is a human being and a blessing, a gift from God. But yes, I know I am getting off topic here. Essentially that is where the difference of opinion lyes and we all take our own paths in life. Just have to do what YOU feel is best for YOU. Take care..

It is your choice what to wear and noone can change this. All I want to say is that a person is the combination of body and soul. Between these two words there should be an equity, a balance. Nature works at its best when it is in a balance. Just like night and day, human and animals, men and women, fire and water. Think what happens when one of the former comes in disarmony... Rejecting the soul means materialism. Rejecting the body means idealism, platonism. I rarely wear make up and high heel shoes and I dress in a comfortable way without ending to be seen as a sexual object by the other. When the other sees me as an object, when the other sees the sexual side on me, instead of seing the fact that above all I am a person,... well this is not my fault. I 'm not going to cover my body just because the other has a problem. The problem belies on the the other, not on me. Our opinions are very different. What you see as a respect for your body, for me is a marginalization. From my point of view, There is no balance when you overvalue your body, nor when you cover it. However this is my opinion and what works for me doesn't mean that it will work for you. I have to admit that you made a strong declaration out of this poem, reminding us that diversity is a beautifyl and vital thing for this planet. What works for west doesn't mean that it is applicable on other cultures. And that is why your poem represents a lot of muslim women, but still there are many muslim women who cannot be represented by your poem. Thank you for reading this.

Charity Fadun | Mar 12th, 2005
Thank for sharing your poem. I will think about Islam in a different light now.

One thing out of anything that I have gotten from you is that you are a good person. Usually women whom have confronted me pertaining to my dress code are full of rage and anger. What for? I don't know. But I am glad that you care and have concern. But don't worry. I have questioned and analyzed every aspect about Islam and essentially all that I choose to do. And I am happy that you have possed questions which I should think about to make sure that what I am doing is right for me. Don't worry, I am very happy with how I am living my life. One thing that I can conclude is that we both practice modesty. But our ways of practice are different but who cares. Atleast we are aware and we are doing something about it through actions and behavior. Sorry for teh late reply, had midterms this week. But do keep in touch. And don't thank me for reading, it is my pleasure to speak with those with concerns and I am always available for discussion. Reply when you get a chance. Take Care

Rarest Of The Rare | Mar 30th, 2005
Yea Med, I really don't liek what is goin on in France. Not only does it hurt Muslim women, it also restricts other ppl from different religions from showing thier faith. I don't understand thier dicision and i desagree with it until they have some kind of valid reasoning.

Hello Sarah and evryone else,
Ahmed Haroon | Aug 22nd, 2005
Sorry for being so late to comment. Anyway, concerning the frind asking why Muslim men don't wear Hijab, in addition to what Sarah replied, there is difference between the body of a man and that of a woman. As we can see, women can be loved for eveything in their body. For instance, thair hair maybe an advantage, but men are not like them. No one can love a man for his arm for example or for his hair.....The only men who can be loved for the beauty of their body are the prophets and messengers of Allah (God). If you read the holly Qur'an, Joseph chapter (Surat Yusuf) you will see that women loved the prophet Joseph for his great undescriptive beauty....I'm going sort of off the talk, sorry....Anyhow, there are also some researches of western and eastern scientists about Hijab. It was not about it at first, but they found Hijab a better choice. They discovered that under the man's skin a musclinious tissue that can stand the ultraviolet and other harmful sun rays, but woman's skin has a fat tissue instead under it that can be harmed and must be covered except for the face and hands, they have tissues like men. Another way, the body of a woman is seen by Islam as precious and respected thing. The prophet ordered Muslims to take care of women after his death. That made the Egyptian "Prince of Poets" - Ahmed Shawky" talk about women and said in translation: (the mother is a school, if you you raise her well she will bring us good citizens and respectful nation) - poor translation -, anyway there are many other things. If you want read the holly Qur'an or ask a Skeikh (Muslim Scientist).
