One fine (seemingly) summer’s morning, I staggered out of bed and opened my window to the world. The world I had dreamt of the night before was a beautiful place; I pinched myself to test if I was still dreaming. But NO! I was no longer dreaming and YES! the world was reeking of hate and sorrow, misery and distrust, strife and turmoil. A Palestinian suicide-bomber struck a defenseless group of people, as did an Israeli F-16, both of them ripping life out of innocent human bodies, rival Afghan warlords shelled entire villages, a lone gunman slaughtered a terrified crowd………. I pulled my eyes off of these dreadful sights in search of greener pastures, but my eyes found none. Instead, I was confronted with poverty, abuse, ill health, sores to my sleepy eyes. I am taken aback by what I see …… my eyes are heavy ……… I fall into a trance……
I dream of a world, but no, this isn’t the world, at least this isn’t the world I lived in…. Death and destruction, the devilish twins, have visited Earth. Mutilated bodies, leaving only the barren and rubble-strewn ground, the stench of rotting flesh… Ah, a nuclear bomb is to blame, but who sent it on its deadly mission? Humans? Or did the bomb just decide to tour the world and test its destructive might? I am caught-up by strong air currents, I am being carried elsewhere, I am afraid of what I may see…… I find myself in a land, a land that has been overcome by crisis, crisis of the worst kind. Poverty has reached its peak, people dying of hunger on the roadside are commonplace here, a hungry baby wails by its lifeless mother. Doesn’t anyone care? Alas, there is no one left to care. Is this planet Earth? I cried out to God, “WHY?” Humankind is to blame, humankind…………
I dream of a world; presently I indulge in pure, fresh air and greenery. Flowers are in full bloom – violet, red, yellow. The air I breathe has the fragrance of love and peace, affection and tranquility. Children frolic in the park, ex-foes work for development and healing, nuclear warheads are being destroyed, no stomach goes hungry. Globalization is being used positively to bring peace and development for all. Is this Paradise? No, this is Earth. Rivalry is unheard-of, hate is unknown, love reigns supreme………
People of the world, take a moment to look at the world around you.
If we want to make a new world we certainly have the material ready…… the first one was made out of chaos.
People of the world, the two worlds are before you. Take your pick……
