Ritalin, also known as methylphenidate, is used to help people with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Ritalin is manufactured by Novartis Pharmaceuticals.
The drug has been in use for over forty years and is widely prescribed, with over eleven million users. Ritalin is especially popular among school-aged children as some educational professionals claim the drug helps students focus on classroom activities.
However, many healthcare professionals are now questioning the drug's widespread use, as concerns mount regarding Ritalin dependence and other complications. There is some evidence that children accustomed to taking Ritalin during childhood may be more prone to experiment with illicit drugs during adolescence. I was diagnosed with adhd when I was 12 years old almost 20 years ago. Shortly after I was forced to take it by the school in order to attend. My behavior became worse after about the first 2 weeks. I then started to smoke thereafter which calmed me down after taking the medication. Which led me to the use of marijuana which I did not think was so bad because it calmed me down even better than the ritalin. Finally my mother decided to take me off the meds, and what do ya know my drug use stopped along with my smoking, However there was still the issue of my bad attitude and extremely short temper. So she eliminated all sugar out of my diet and replaced it with natural sugar. such as honey and fructose and carob chocolate, and my attitude problem and short temper disappered and I was able to concentrate in school once again. During this time my GPA went from a 0.023 to 3.38 within one report card cycle. I still suffer from mental problems which started shortly after taking ritalin such as closterphobia, and not being in control of a car, I NEED to be driving or im not going.
