Even in my dreams I have problems identifying the one thing that binds the human race together into the single family called human beings. All I see around me are reasons, signs and testimonies that diversify the human race and perpetually sever those worn-out fibres of unity. These icons of disunity are numerous and are growing by the day. Is it not surprising to note that the whispers of peace from the Creator through his apostles and clerics are thrown to the wind, and in its place is the thundering snarl for blood? The world has gone crazy in its determination to quench its thirst – the lustful thirst for blood.
Ironically, religion, which ought to be the pathway to spiritual fulfillment, is responsible for more deaths than any single disease. It is also appalling to note that this same religion, which is referred to as a soothing balm, a healing touch and a source of inspiration to our weary souls, is in fact used as a sneering beast and sworn enemy to our very existence by a crop of greedy and influential individuals with twisted minds. When it’s suitable, they manipulate vulnerable populace into defending hurriedly prepared policies put together to victimize perceived enemies.
Millions of people have died because they had differing religious and political views from others, while hundreds of millions live in fear, hatred and are uncertain of their neighbour’s next line of action.
Everyday I wake up to a frightful realization that a dozen more individuals have lost their lives to a bizarre bunch of thugs in the guise of defending their religion, party or economic policies. These jobless and misguided youths have made themselves ready-made tools in the hands of a hateful few calling themselves our spiritual and political leaders.
From the days of the old, all through the era of the Roman Empire, down to the present day, politics, religion and greed have led to the death of billions of innocent, hardworking mommies, daddies, brothers, sisters and cousins because they either held, or were presumed to hold opposing opinions.
History will forever hold against the likes of Alexander the great, Attila the barbarian, Adolph Hitler and his Nazi regime and the senseless massacre of the Jews, Idi Amin of Uganda, Saddam Hussein of Iraq, the twin tower incident, the list is endless. Though the actors, the stages and the directors of these despicable acts may differ, the results are always the same – dead bodies, wailing families with rancour and a new passion in their hearts – the passion to hit back!
I shed tears for my brethren in Dafur, Sudan. My heart also goes to the hostages held by the different factions in Iraq. We can only weep with the families of over three hundred Russian victims that lost their loved ones only last week at Beslan last week to members of the Chechnya separatists.
This wasteful and needless loss of lives has to stop! We have taken about all we can manage; the little lines of differences, which ought to induce friendship and interrelation, should not be a reason for disenchantment and strife. We should come up with a goal, a goal to enforce peace and healthy living. We should promote sports, trades and any activity that is focused on unifying the different races in the globe. Let us look inward and emphasize our common features instead of our hard-to-see differences.
I dream of the day our people will learn war no more, where the lions and the sheep will sleep together, the Jews and the Palestinians, Chechens and the Russians will dwell together, and the lord God will turn our swords, guns, grenades and weapons of mass destruction into plough shields, and other resource-generating tools. I also dream of the day we will learn to love our neighbour – at least a little. Then enormous resources spent on security will be directed to life-saving missions to regions languishing in poverty.
Though I pray and hope my dreams come true, I am slowly coming to a sad realization that lions and sheep can not sleep together – one need the other to survive, money will for ever be invested in security – it employs millions of people, if anything, WMD will forever be improved on – that is research and development. Finally, impoverished regions in Africa, especially those without natural resources, will continue to suffer because no one cares!
