Writing this piece was a difficult task for me, the reason being that, I never knew where to start. But all the same, I had to start from somewhere. Morality according to the oxford Advance Learner’s Dictionary is defined as, “the principle concerning right and wrong or good or bad behaviour”. Put in other words, it is also defined as “the extent to which something is right on wrong, good or bad according to moral principles.” Looking at the trend in which the world is so called advancing, a thick dark cloud of moral decadence is left amongst the youth by the way immorality is spreading like an evil disease across the nations. And this has been the concern of many organisations and individuals including myself. DARE TO BE DIFFERENT In my quest to know why immorality is gaining its foothold, I discovered that the minds of the youths are being polluted with what they hear and see happing around them. Looking at the information technology and its effect, one can notice that it is causing more harm than good to the youth due to the kinds of information’s displayed. Pornographic sites are displayed on the internet, the secular musicians employ nudity in their videos and pornographic movies are in the reach of these teenagers. But charity they say begins at home. So the first step therefore should be self - discipline. You as a person got to discipline yourself. For the fact that skimpy and revealing clothing are in Vogue does not mean you should put them on. Or the fact that prostitution, lesbianism or homosexuality is finding its way into the society does not mean you should also indulge in those acts. You have to be different and decent in your conduct, conversation and act from that other person because God separately created you from that person; his/her life is difference from yours. Dare to be difference! Emulate people of noble character & shun the way of immorality. The end justifies the means and the Bible says that, “there is a way that seems right on a man, but the end is destruction”. Therefore act right! THE ROLE OF THE FAMILY The role of the family in this issue is very, very important. Apart from self, the family has the greatest role to play. Personal discovery has shown that, 70% - 85% of the prostitutes, armed robbers and others indulging in one immoral act or the others are from shattered homes or homes where the parents has little on no time for the children. As a parent or a guardian, how organized or moral conscious are your family members or your wards? The secular society is so called advancing in the trend that parents have little or no time for the children due to the series of meetings needed to attend, large volume of work needed to do in the office thereby forgetting about the moral life of the children. Do you as a parent take out time to really counsel your child on the etiquette of life? What kind of company does your child keeps? What kind of movies does he/she watch? What kind of clothes does he/she wear or his/her general conduct like? And how united is your family? These are some of the things the parents or the family as a whole should put into consideration. Because the family is the first society system the child is first exposed to. THE ROLE OF TEACHERS, LECTURERS AND THE SCHOOL PROPRIETORS. The situation is even worse in our higher institutions. The moment one got admitted, he/she feels he/she has arrived and the whole world is at his/her feet. The ladies are seductively dressed, there’s little or no regards for the elderly ones, examination malpractices is on the increase, the students take in to drugs and cultism still lingers on. Kudos to some institutions that are taking measures to curb this menace. But a lot is still needed to be done. The role of the teachers, lecturers, principals and even the school proprietors should not be overlooked. After the home, the next societal system the child is exposed to is the school. And from the school, peer groups are developed. As a classroom teacher it has to go beyond teaching your pupils how to read and write. Teach the children some moral ethics and where you think the child needs a special counselling never hesitate to do so. And as a proprietor or principal, moral standards should be set and ensured they are met by the students. The rate at which morality is degrading should be everybody’s concern. All hands therefore should be on deck to curb this menace ravaging our society. As a youth consider your ways to see whether you are threading on the right path. You are a unique person created in God’s own image. You don’t have to be a photocopy of some one else. Do the right thing and shun evil. Even if the crowd is one the wrong path, dare to be different and walk on the right path. And whenever you see something that is wrong never hesitate to correct, for evil prevails when the good people are silent. You and I can uphold the right moral standards and make the world a better place to live in if we wake up to the task of erasing every form of immorality in our society. « return. |
