In times past , volunteering for a noble course such as saving lives and community works were highly applauded. It has also been a noble objective that can only come from a gallant mind. Emergencies are one of the situations that provoke the need for people to volunteer to do something otherwise which would have been paid for under normal circumstances free of charge.
During the Vietnam war in America and the civil war in Nigeria, among many other examples, people who believed in the courses of the wars volunteered to fight for it. At critical times though, citizens are mandated to compulsorily volunteer for a particular course though this may not be regarded as a voluntary effort because there are those who would have preferred to stay away.
As wars, conflicts and fierce disagreements kept shooting up, casualties were born women and children became helpless and hungry. This on it’s own resulted in the need for those who do not have anything to do with the conflicts to take part in them in a rather
more positive outlook. Thereby volunteering to give aid and succor to the different kinds of casualties.
Voluntary work does not come however as a result of wars and conflicts only, nor are voluntary workers seekers of employment. This is true as in the world today, there are many different emergency situations
and many well employed people working tirelessly to help in one way or the other in resolving these issues. Health issues, environmental hazards, natural disasters, human rights abuses, young people's course are all part of the situations which it’s increasing surge cannot be properly arrested with the limited number of professional workers in these fields. Volunteering therefore is a conscientious call to duty which may not be recognized. It is a dignified humanitarian effort to alleviate the predicaments of others or helping to do so. It is a worthwhile effort depending on the nature of the work. This is true because one can undertake a voluntary work on things detrimental to society. It is however further illustrated in the poem “volunteering” which I write below, as there are no direct expectation of wage, it so happens that the voluntary worker gives not only his skill, energy and time, but his material resources as well.
What a world we have
what a time we save
often we seem to sleep
our eyes though wide open we flip
now tell me from yonder ;
Whose duty is it to work?
though others value pay
i see reward in no pay
though i am not dazed
people think i am so
only because i dare to do a work
yes it is work
for the recipients of my labour say so,
The reward comes in a better place for others.
