National Technical University of Ukraine - leading Ukrainian Univesity. An overview of History and present. One of the oldest and well-known technical universities in Europe and the biggest University in Ukraine is National Technical University of Ukraine "Kyiv Polytechnic Institute". Lives and outstanding achievements of the internationally renowned scientists Dmitriy Mendeleyev, Igor Sicorsky, Sergey Korolev, Stepan Timoshenko, Yevhen Paton, Borys Paton and others were linked with NTUU"KPI".

The idea of creation of a higher technical education establishment first arose as far as 18th of February 1880. Famous European architects Benua, Gogen, Kitner, Kobelev, Pomerantsev, Zender and Shreter rivaled for the opportunity to fulfill their projects of the Polytechnicum. Prof. Kitner’s project combining Neo-Gothic rigour and turbulent vivacity of turn-of-the-century innovations pleased the honourable jury the most the opening ceremony took place on the 31st of August 1898. D.I. Mendeleev was the first head of the State Examination Commission in 1903. Since its foundation the University has been efficient in training and preparation of both highly skilled technical professionals - the backbone of industrial era, and also of mobile, daring, frontline researchers and constructors. National Technical University of Ukraine has been contributing into Polish (!) science considerably too as the Association of KPI alumni operates in Poland since 1922

International acknowledgement that National Technical University of Ukraine enjoys is well merited. Centenary of NTUU "KPI" foundation has been included into the list of important historical events of 1998-1999 by the decision of the 29 General Conference of UNESCO (20.X.-12.XI., 1997 Paris).

NTUU "KPI" has 19 educational faculties, 5 educational- research institutes, 15 research institutes and 6 engineering centres, where 44 Academicians and Correspondent- Members of Academies of Sciences, over 200 professors, associate professors, assistants and 32800 students and postgraduates work and study.

An inalienable page of KPI’s history is its participation in the popular democratic movement in the Russian Empire. Students and professors of the Institute supported demands to democratise universal education, to allow freedom of organisation. Students called for liquidation of police supervision on campus and rejected repressive politics of the government. In Years 1898, 1901 and 1908 the polytechnicum remained an area of mounting tension between pro democratic students and professors’ groups and conservative governmental authorities. Democratic movement in the KPI culminated in 1907 when resignation of the institute’s director Tymofeev and a number of leading scientists Paton, Bazhaev, Radzig happened as a response to new repressive regulations introduced by the Russian government.

In-between 1917 and 1941 KPI has developed considerably, with lucrative state support. With the outbreak of the World War 2, KPI was evacuated to Tashkent where it joined the Middle Asian Industrial Institute. Since 1920s KPI has been active in disseminating knowledge, educational and research experience in Ukraine and abroad. Only imagine! Industrial Institute, Agricultural Institute, Transport and Aviation institutes of Kyiv and many other educational and research institutions all derived from branches of Kpi which had a certain share of independence.

Departments of Management and Marketing, Social science, Linguistics, Institute of Applied and Systematic Analysis, department of biotechnology have been created in the last decade of the 20th century to satisfy national demand for specialists in subsequent fields.
NTUU"KPI" actively co-operates with foreign partner-universities such as Higher Technical school of Aachen, the Technical University of Ilmenau (Germany), the Technical University of Delft (Holland), Dresden Technical University (Germany), University of Paris-XII (France), Technical University of Bristol (England) and others.

Up to 800 foreigners from 50 countries of the world study in the University. More than 5000 students from many foreign countries graduated from Kyiv Polytechnic Institute and work in 112 countries. The University has its Preparatory Department where foreign entrants, within 10 months course study Ukrainian, Russian, English, Mathematics, Physics, Biology and other subjects in the scope that is necessary for further mastering of the university program. Offices of several renowned international educational projects operate on campus of the University .The British Council had its office at NTUU "KPI" and collaborated with the university. Since 1994 the Goethe-Institute from Germany works at the University Library of NTUU "KPI" (offering German language courses, acquaintance with history, science, culture and traditions of the German people). Created with the aid of IBM Company, the Centre of Integrated Computer Technologies (CIM-Centre), virtually the first modern IT agency in Eastern Europe, provided with up-to-date equipment and advanced software of IBM Company is located in the University. Productive and developing partner relations with an IT giant like IBM and the immense success of the IT department students at ACM ICPS International computer programmers Olympics testify to the NTUU potential to invest considerably to the Future of Ukraine as a valuable and productive sector of the global community of innovators.
