FAO in New Youth Project for El Salvador In collaboration with the UN Gender Inter-agency Group (GIGNU) in El Salvador, FAO joins five other organizations in the implementation of a new project entitled Interagency Programme for the Empowerment of Adolescent Women in El Salvador. The three-year project, funded by the United Nations Fund for International Partnerships (UNFIP), has as its overall objective to empower and strengthen the role of adolescent girls in the promotion of their rights and human development. FAO’s specific responsibility is to train and organize adolescent girls to implement non-traditional income generating activities.

The other agencies involved include: UNICEF, UNFPA, UNDP and The Pan American Health Organization (OPS). The project also involves a variety of government and non-governmental institutions in the search for major impact through synergies, an exchange of experience and a more efficient use of resources. Although the project focuses on girl adolescents, young boys will also be encouraged to participate in the workshops and other activities, with the idea that together, they can seek changes in traditional gender roles towards a more humanizing, empowering and liberating society.

FAO’s input seeks to provide the adolescent women, primarily in rural areas, with the skills, knowledge and experience they need to start and maintain small and medium-sized businesses and other income generating activities. To compliment this effort, attention will also be given to training, village youth-group formation and leadership development.
