Oral traditions: A view from Jamaica
There is a symbiotic relationship between oral and written communication. They complement each other beautifully. Through oral and written history and traditions we learn more about the many layers of human experience. Although distinct, these layers are not separated from one other, but they overlap to give us a much deeper and richer understanding of life experience. Written histories are just that, the stories of the ideal, of the heroic. Oral history helps to fill in the blanks and to inform written history.

Literacy has changed how we learn about culture. It has given us a more analytical approach to culture; through literacy we are better able to understand more of the layers that make up our culture. Jamaica has an eclectic and ever evolving culture. With an absence of many written texts on our culture, oral tradition has formed the bases for learning what makes us Jamaican. In several communities, memory serves as a museum.

Special thanks to Mr. David Stimpson- Curator- Museums of History and Ethnography, Jamaica
