The Ontario Secondary School Student's Association is one of a kind. It is the only student-run organization for the students of ontario of it's kind and i'm proud ot be a part of it. No other organization runs over 10 leadership conferences a year and invites students from all over the province to come and lead or be led in activities that promote student leadership. I myself started at the bottom of the organzational pyramid. I went to my first conference almost 2 years ago as a delegate and had the time of my life. I met people that i had no idea exsisted and began to appreciate what i had more and saw what i could be in the smiling, supportive faces of the people in my session group. I still talk to the people from that first session, but i now have 6 conferences behind me and i'm working on my 7th. Being a leader is the most amazing experience i have ever had the chance to have. I would have never ran for student council or even ran for Minister of Public Relations for my region if it had not been for the people at that first conference. They made me feel alive, worthwhile and a pleasure to be with. This was a way I had never thought of myself before. It was uplifting and gave me something that never had before; self confidence. So when I rose the occasion and ran for students council, I had the hearts of a hundred backing me up. The encouraging words of my friends from the conferences I had been to rang in my ears as i gave my speach in front of the 900 students of my school. Their eyes were fixed on me and I was scared half to death, 1800 eyes watching you, waiting for you to flub a word or make a slip of the tongue. but I held my composure and kept talking until it was time to sit down. Those were the hardest 3 minutes of my life. Needless to say, I didn't win. But I didn't care. I had concured a fear that had haunted me for years; Public speaking.

OSSSA leadership sarah | Jul 22nd, 2003
From what I've heard, OSSSA sounds like such an amazing council, with the power and support to do so much. I wish i had known about it earlier in my high school years, so that i could have gotten more involved.
I only heard about it this year, from a graduating friend who was in charge of coordinating the Toronto leadership conference. Unfortunately, all he had to say about OSSSA's organization and leadership that year was negative. Having missed the oppertunity to make a contribution to the association, i would just like to encouragee all those who do have that chance to please run for a position, or attend their awesome conferences.

I was incredably lucky to have stumbled upon OSSSA in my freshman year. This was the perfect year, i went with an oen mind and friends whom i had just met. In just 3 glorious days I returned a realatively different person whom knew herself better and the friends I went with I now consider my sisters!!!!! If you have the opertunity to go take it, i'm goign for my second time this year at LCVI and the time couldn't pass faster.
A Worthwhile Experience Nicole Joron | Oct 14th, 2003
I was greatly involved with the OSSSA throughout high school. I went to several conferences as first a delegate and then as a leader. I was even the President of Eastern South for one year!
The organization does have its problems as all groups have.... but the power the OSSSA holds to inspire youth across Ontario is much greater than the issues it faces.
I will always remember what I learned working with the OSSSA. It helped me to develop as a person and as a leader. I will always cherish the adventures I had and the friendships I made at the many conferences and meetings.
I encourage everyone who has the opportunity to, to get involved!

AngieMjj makes a great point, OSSSA is not the only student run org. in the province. It is important to also note that OSSSA includes only students from English Public Secondary schools. OSTA-AECO is an official stakeholder with the Ministry of Education that is not limited to the representation of one genre of education. They unite without conformity the 4 types of publicly funded education in Ontario.
Student Trustees Andrew Leonard | Jan 25th, 2004
It should be noted the OSSSA met with Snobelen (Education Minister) back in the mid 90's, and was responsible for the insertion of legislation which made it law to have a student trustee in every school board in the province. How do I know? I was at that meeting.
Futher, the OSSSA's constitutional mandate deals with all students across the province, regardless of language. It's the OSSSA-AESSO.

OSSSA is a joke Carl Malone | Jan 29th, 2004
This organization makes me laugh my ass off. All that OSSSA is is a group of whiny, middle-class echo-boomers who believe that their voice matters. They bond together because they don't get enoug attention at home. Mommy and Daddy work all the time and don't love their kids, so they go to find guidance and moral support at these stupid conferences. I went to one of these conferences as a delegate. It was the stupidest damn thing that I had ever seen. It reminded me of this one news reel from the thirties about youth groups that I saw. It was kind of hard to understand, though because the narration was in German. This crap that they try to hand us. It's a joke. These people paint a smile on their face. They're all dead on the inside. All these people at OSSSA, pretend to give a damn about issues and speaking out. But all I saw was flirting and bullshit. If you're going to try to make a change, don't dick around. Nothing but a bunch of horny guys and girls with low self-confidence in the mood for a good time. You're not going to do a damn bit of good with this ridiculous excuse for an organization. OSSSA=Hitler Jugend. You should all kill yourselves. You misrepresent the youth of Ontario. Shame on you. You utter, utter failures.

Seeing as how none of you have responded to what I said in my original message, sent a month ago, it seems obvious that I am right. The OSSSA is a joke. Everyone that takes it seriously should be shot in the fucking head. I laugh at you all, you sick, stupid fucks. Eat shit and die.
Re: OSSSA is a joke Tom McCarthy | May 28th, 2004
Ummm... Carl, opportunities are what you make of them. I agree with you that conferences do not represent the 'real' world. But I am pretty sure that the lessons and attitudes at conferences have changed many lives. Not only that, but what you see at conferences are really only the tip of the iceberg. The people learning the most there are those doing the organizing.
As for your references to violence and Hitler, they're both disturbing and unacceptable. You owe everyone in this forum an apology. Carl, I really hope you're doing ok. I hope you're still around to read this.
