Capital punishment is the greatest penalty in man’s law against evil doers to promote peace and order in the land. In the Philippines, lawmakers decided to return the death penalty after former Pres. Cory Aquino abolished it. According to them it would help curtail the increasing crime rate in the Philippines.

However, in spite of the re-imposition of death penalty, the crime rate is still increasing, probably because the roots of these abominable deeds are not yet suppressed. It is usual that a wild grass will continue to grow if its roots still hold on the ground. The vigilantes, criminals, rapist, abductors, rebels and many others are just the foliage of the wild grass.

Some are putting the blame mostly to mass media and drug abuse. As we know mass media is widely accessible. It contributes to the development or deterioration of the society. Violence and sex are best-bolstered in mass media. The pornography in tabloids, newspapers, magazines, movies and Internet are pervading. Despite the fact that we all know that drug abuse is prohibited still some are tempted. Drug addiction in the Philippines is so unmanageable. The problem in drug smuggling issues is still not yet resolved by the government because drug lords, drug pushers and drug users have the influence to the persons in authority. Precisely for that reason, a drug addict could do unlawful acts because he is possessed by the drug’s fiendish spirit and a person influenced by sex and violence he learned from mass media could do the same thing. That is why rape, murders and other grievous and heinous crimes are rampant in our society. In addition, there are still other roots of crimes like poverty, rebellion, graft and corruption, political anarchy and others that should be treated first. We cannot instantly have a peaceful society with the imposition of the death penalty alone but the reformation of the justice system to suppress these roots.

Thus, the roots of the wild grass should be removed from the ground now, before our land becomes a dominion of serpents.
