Environment , Peace & Conflict   Poetry

I opened my window. In the distant twilight
I heard the shrill whistle of a bird, and then there was darkness.

I said to myself:
Where am I? Is this madness?

There were no movements around me;
I was surrounded by nothingness, gripped with sadness.

Going down I saw debris;
I stood there alone, and a voice said, “Follow me!”

He took me to the garden where children used to play;
It looked like a graveyard where corpses now lay.

We went to the path where mom once led me to school;
Burnt and destroyed, it looked like hell's school.

The darkness had spread, the smoke was prominent;
Evil had spread and that was evident.

He closed my eyes… and we arrived somewhere,
Atop a mountain from which I could see everywhere.

"What have we done? Oh, what have we done?
Nothing is left; we have killed everyone!"

He took me to the river where we used to play;
Full of toxins it was, green, carrying the garbage away.

Walking with him I saw all the trees:
Leaves shed, branches dead. Diseased.

A glimmer of hope remaining, I looked at the sky,
Saw dark clouds; what happened to the birds that used to fly?

We’ve destroyed everything, left no stone unturned,
Left nothing, we’ve made everything burn.

I cried and wept, burst my heart’s cloud,
“Who are you? What is this?” I asked him aloud.

“The one you pray to and share everything with, son!
I am the one.
Look here and there, see what you have done.

“The creation of the world was the most precious thing;
But, at mankind’s hands, it was reduced to nothing.

“I gave you happiness and all the things you need,
But you found your happiness in something indeed.

“Gave you earth, fire, wind, water and ether,
But you used these to destroy yourselves altogether.

“Your greed made you develop technologies and innovations,
But you forgot happiness was in all my creations.”

He had opened my eyes to the harsh truth.
I said, “Is this it? Or is there a way out?”

He said, “I did nothing, it is all of your making.
You are alone but believe you have no need."

Depressed and sad I lay there.
I heard a sharp sound, my alarm had rung.

Opened my eyes; asked , “What was that?”
Prayed to God, thanked God for sending me back.

The dream had changed my life by endless bounds,
I was different now, had heard God's sound.

Got up from bed, opened the window;
Everything was normal, as I saw from the window.

I saw a few trees with leaves, beginning to shed,
I saw the whistling bird too, but he lay dead...

Hi. This is Shantanu, from India. I'm a 19-year-old male.

Well, there are many things I would like to share with, you but I don't want to bore you... just that this poem means a lot to me.

I honestly believe that you will connect to it because it actually shows you the future. I completely understand that we have busy lives and responsibilities, but just take some time out to see what we are actually doing!
