Youth un-employment is one of the biggest threats the world is facing now a days. In developed countries this threat may be not very alarming but in the third world countries like Pakistan, this issue needs urgent attention. It is one of the biggest causes of terrorism in the world because highly educated people are not able to apply their kills within a steady job; they become a puppet in the hands of terrorists. Similarly these youngsters become the targets of drug mafias and other organizations which use them as disposable henchmen.
However, the issue is just not un-employment but also under employment.
Again, this may not be a big problem in developed countries but it’s another big problem in third world countries. Can you imagine a Masters Degree holder working as a waiter in a hotel? Or a PhD recipient working as a primary school teacher? When injustice is done to them, they react very strongly and may become hands in other illegal activities. So to tackle the issue we must keep both things in mind and how to create jobs, thus, solving the issues of un- and under employment.
Every problem has a solution only requirements are our intentions. People need to come together in order to tackle such a great matter. The dilemma of third world countries is that the government is working only on economic sectors and has forgotten the social sector. Pakistan as an example, has drastically improved within the last 45 years by showing vast improvement on the economic scales. However, the social sector spending has still not increased.
Together we should work on an agenda to force our governments to spend more on their social sector expansions which will create new jobs and resolve the issue. Also the rich and developed countries should transfer technology and should help poor countries in development of the social sector. The well-established countries can then force the poor countries to spend at least 50% of grants in development of social sectors and creation of new jobs.
Similarly private sector companies, especially multi national companies should spend more and more in creation of new jobs. For example a multinational company can open a small scale hospital which will give jobs to Doctors, Nurses directly and indirectly to many who will be some what related to the hospital. Once started the hospital will eventually run by itself through different means.
We at YES-Pakistan (NWFP, Provincial Chapter) are trying to do our utmost to address the issue of unemployment and under employment. We have a panel of experts who give suggestions to the young and talented according to their skills. Not only have we contacted various private companies, but we also motivate them to invest a small share of their income in new schemes which can create new jobs. We are trying to do the best we can but through this conference we can exchange new ideas and can take advantage of each other's experiences and make way for a better tomorrow.
