Professor Bauerlien claimed that" internet generation" is a dumb generation, I don not want to accuse Mr. Bauerlien of lacking wisdom, because I do believe, he would not talk about a subject without conducting research on the issue, so that, we should see what internet really is, what is dumb generation, can we fault internet for making a dumb generation.
Almost every people in this world know about internet or at least heard about that (even in the poorest part of the world), using of internet as an efficient communication tool is very popular, according to wikipedia, the free online encyclopedia ," Internet is a worldwide, publicly accessible series of interconnected computer networks that transmit data by packet switching using the standard Internet Protocol (IP). It is a "network of networks" that consists of millions of smaller domestic, academic, business, and government networks, which together carry various information and services, such as electronic mail, online chat, file transfer, and the interlinked web pages and other resources of the World Wide Web (WWW)".
With above definition internet has many aspects that can not be researched collectively, for example, online chat or friend finding networks such as "face book" have not as same effect as trade networks or educational networks, in addition, each aspect in itself have different meanings, for instance, I use online chat for business contacts but my friend use that for entertainment, Isn't there any difference? How did Mr. Bauerlien distribute the result of one aspect to anthers?
Mr. Bauerlien faults some information networks such as online encyclopedia of making a stupid generation? How an encyclopedia can become a tool for generating stupidity?
I think we can not judge the internet as the cause of dumbness, because internet facilitated accessing to information that we were not been able to get them at past, although it should be confessed that internet have harmful effects, being good or bad is dependent of how to use the internet, I think pundits such as Mr. Bauerlien should criticize the culture of using internet instead of internet itself.
Culture of using the internet is an important matter and there is no doubt in this reality that Mr. Bauerlien as a pundit faces to many case of maltreatment in using of internet, for example in one side he sees students who are very engaged in entertainment with "online chat"," face book", "perfspot", "hi5" and etc, in other side some of the students using easiest ways (such as free encyclopedia) to acquire information that can make them mentally dumb.
With all of the above realities we can not fault internet for such maltreatments, this maltreatments come back to our modern culture , for example we can imagine a knife , with this knife we do our normal works, but we also can kill some one , killing some one will be our intention not the fault of knife! Internet as like as knife in this story, we should accept internet is only a communication tool.
Prof. Bauerlien also invented a new concept,"the dumb generation" that is distributed to all of new generation, in this way to prove that new generation is not dumb we should compare today with yesterdays , we deal with the reality that today is more innovative than yesterday, new generation is so active and creative.
In the new world, activity and creativity is compulsory, today innovation is a tool of competition.
Every people, every business and every country need to be competitive, so dumbness has no place in new generation.
I think that new generation is not dumb; it is tending to be more innovative, internet as tool accelerated waves of innovation, for example I can give my self as a sample of new generation, I am from one of the most deprived part of the world, chabahar in sistan va baluchistan province of Iran, internet has given this opportunity for me to learn rare things online, contact with every kind of people, do my business and etc.
