Tribal politics and party affiliations have also divided students. Prominent in all universities’ elections were the two-distinct sides: the PNU/ Eastern Alliance and the ODM/ Western Alliance. Such factors deny students true leadership based on courage, ideology, swiftness in action and razor-sharp intellects.
The students and the administration are at war as to who is really wrong. The administrators defend their gallant position: “Students should be ready to be responsible leaders. We love student leadership and we are ready to work with them,” says Prof.Mugenda. In a combative tone, Dr.Katana, an academic register, says, “Students should first understand university operations before complaining. They may think that they are right but instead they are pushing for the wrong things.”
The conclusion is clear; nobody is willing to accommodate the blame ball in his or her court. But all things considered, student bodies are being suffocated and it’s not long before the hands of the clock start to count down the last moments of their survival. The era of vibrant student leaders seems to be over- no one is ready to stand and be counted. Will the student leadership equation be solved? And will the outcome be positive or negative?
The writer is a student leader.
