The slogan for Planet Project is "Our Voice, Our World". Planet Project intends to be the world’s largest interactive poll in history. For four days, starting on November 15 and ending on November 19, thought-provoking and entertaining questions will be posted, inviting pollsters like you and me to share our thoughts on topics ranging from dating and relationships, to religion, to law and order, with the rest of the world.
Millions of people will be able to participate in Planet Project via the Internet, but volunteers around the world will be getting in touch with people in remote areas without Internet access. Planet Project will be taken from the hills of Tibet to the rain forest in Costa Rica, thereby making Planet Project truly global in its scope. Planet Project will utilize highly innovative, never-used-before technology, developed between partnerships with a variety of leaders in web-based and Tele-communications technologies, which makes it possible for people participating in Planet Project to instantly compare the similarities and differences of their responses to other responses from all over the world.
Okay, so it sounds impressive, but what does it mean?
Well, let us think about this for a moment. If Internet technology makes global connections possible, then the communities of the future will not just include your next door neighbours or your friend who lives across the street, but also the accountant who lives in Japan, and the jazz singer in San Paulo. Are you ready to open your door to the world? Are you ready to expand your community to include residents of Jakarta, Madrid, Glasgow, Nigeria, and Stockholm?
The questions in Planet Project – some frivolous, others more thought-provoking are designed to remind us that despite of speaking different languages, and coming from different cultural, and socio-economic backgrounds, we all share common human experiences. A bus driver living in Dublin, and a teacher from New Delhi, may discover that they have much in common. Planet Project is a chance to relate to each other about what it means to be human across cultural, social, political and economic boundaries. What is exciting about Planet Project is that the interactive technology that has already been developed to make Planet Project a reality has the potential to host more such global events. Imagine having the ability to participate in a global vote or referendum, or have your opinion count in a global consensus on a pertinent environmental or political issue? Who knows what the future will bring…?
Planet Project and TakingITGlobal
The questions posed by the Planet Project Poll and The Student Underground, for students around the world aged 13-20, will hopefully prove to be spark that ignites the desire for further discussions and debates about issues raised. At TakingITGlobal, we challenge you to further explore the themes touched on in the Planet Project poll. Can you call yourself a global citizen? What does that really mean? Are we the only life "out here"? How can we shorten the Digital Divide?
Get inspired! Get informed! Get involved!
