In a similar fashion, our dear President today, General Olusegun Obasanjo, who ascended the throne after the coup which led to the death of General Muritala Mohammad, later told the world that he did not have any intention of becoming the head of state and that he was called upon to lead the affairs of the nation at the time.
As stepping aside is the norm, the stage was set for him to come and start from where he stopped in 1999. Like the excuse given to Nigerians regarding when he took over the mantle of leadership as head of state, Obasanjo reiterated that it was the Nigerian people who had confidence in him as the best option in a country of over 130 million people.
On coming back again in 2003, the people stopped calling on him and as such he had to consult with the Almighty, which gave him the second mandate, making him the only one sent by both God and man.
General Ibrahim Babangida was later to become the head of state. He, in actual fact, mentioned to the world that he was a military President, an assertion that is most unacceptable.

crazy democracy douglas.ojumah | Sep 18th, 2003
the current nigerian democratic experiment is loaded with deception and despiration . i dont understand why someone will want to "serve" the people at all cost even if it entails killing, retired military generals have hijacked the political terrain with their ill gotten wealth . infact only God almighty can liberate nigerians from the pangs of these political jobbers
