So gloomy were the nights and grey the afternoons when my Father was sad.
Bloody the streets became when His children no longer sought His counsel.
Hatred and murder curdled through the night when my Father was sad.
I sat there in the corner looking into His stern face,
Facing disgrace and shame all in survival’s name.
Shredded the homes became, and untidy with corpses the markers displayed.

Oh, my dearest Father, when will this gracious smile be?
When will the grey day skies become sun-bright?
When will the gloomy night become luminous?
When will Your children wake up from their greedy nightmares and embrace one another?

Oh! Father dear,
Time is flying by with swiftness and caution.
Losers we are becoming.
How long will this troubling drama continue-
One that has more antagonists than protagonists,
More tragedy than comedy?
Is it another earthly Hell?
Father! Father! In tears I’m asking for Your opinion.
For the sake of the unprotected, help us and grant us Your smile.
Suffer us no longer.

As I spoke those words it seems I was falling into thoughts of unforeseen happiness,
And in the midst of my blunderings and babbling, my Father smiled.
That very moment, the skies were blue and the birds sang swiftly for the first time,
The fields became green and the crops bloomed.
Of, Father, You have graced Your stubborn children!

Then with civility my Father looked at me and laughed so loud at me.
He said, “I am proud.
Son, no more war shall be;
No more destruction shall be;
No more mistrust shall be.
All You need is love, peace, unity and sincerity
In everything you do together.”

Daniel N Thomas

I am Nuxe Daniel Thomas, a Liberian, age 28, and a practicing writer. I am the founder and president of the Sustainable Program for the Education and Ability of Kids (SPEAK).

I am also a student of the Stella Maris Polytechnic institution and a practicing architect by profession.

I love writing and inspiring others in times of great worries. I have written several poems, essays and a pending book entitled “The Agonies of a Child.” This book is based upon my experience as a child in my family circle and in the civil war that lasted for more than a decade in our country.

I love and respect the views of others.

Hopefully.., Just what your dad said Nuxe, is all that Liberia need right now.... He brought some relieve and peace of spirit to me when you ended with his last laugh....that say: "Son, no more war shall be; No more destruction shall be; No more mistrust shall be." All we really need now is love, peace, unity and sincerity in everything we do together. Thanks for your writing and welcome... Tee
