I just had the latest vision that the Philippines is going to make it as one of the world’s richest country in a few years time. Good news don’t you think? You have every reason to be excited. My psychic abilities have never failed. We have a bright future just around the bend. Yes, it’s about to happen… around the year 2300. Hey, it’s that near! Tell me now: what’s keeping us away from becoming the dream state that we’ve envisioned for so long? Let me ask you then: What have you done to help achieve that radical vision?
They say it’s corruption and the growing unrest; others say it’s illiteracy. Still, some think it’s our nation’s irreversible fate to be poor in countless dimensions. I don’t think so. I say it’s just us people. We are the victims of our own misjudgments. For starters, had we not sworn to ourselves to run a government and rule a country that is “to the people, for the people, by the people”? We have grown weak because we complain and complain and go on pointing one another for the misfortunes of the nation. Can’t we instead settle our issues and work for the bigger, more relevant things? This is the very reality that most of us Filipinos are too proud to admit.
I have a simple resolution and it goes by saying: Pinoys, we ought to love the Philippines. We owe her our life, our identity. Let us convince ourselves that she is worth repaying.
Whatever Philippine life has served each of us must be viewed relatively. Those who are eating from the sweet side of the apple must then have every reason to give back to society what society has granted them. Those who are facing the poisoned side must never be bitter of the tough going; instead, they must seek for improvement and swear support for their fellowmen. It is the dictate of both gratitude and sense of duty for us Filipinos to care for our dear country.
Today, we need not fight a thousand wars nor write a million books to show how we value the Philippines. The best we can give is our sincerest support towards the empowerment of the society. What is essential in these modern times is for us to build our nation as strong as we can make her. Then again, reality does not require us to become someone big to help shape the present and the future. Even by just being good citizens of our country, by doing each and every of our roles prudently, we contribute enormously to the betterment of the entire nation.
By simply abiding by the laws – and if everyone would do so – we can look forward to a more internally peaceful community. Less social affliction bothering our society would allow us to channel our attention to more productive exertions. Collaborative local efforts amongst us citizens in developing our livelihoods will surely grant for us better economic standing. This will be a big help to those who most need of jobs. This, in turn, alleviates the situation of those under the poverty line. We then can see to the hunger management in our country. In the process, we can do away with literacy and educational issues as both families and government grant more and more children schooling. We will then have a more skilled labor force in the country to continue our efforts and aspirations for the generations to come.
The mentioned illustration is not a mere ideal to ponder on. It has every will and way to become a reality. But then again, it takes love to get us started – and conviction to get us going. I do not believe that some people ‘do not care’. They may appear unworried but the real case is that they do not know how to show the ‘care’.
I love the Philippines. But I do not want to love her alone.
