Bright lights, flashy signs,
The City is a marvellous place.
Buses, billboards and back covers
Trying to sell us something new
Buses pass, we read their signs,
We even believe their meaningless lies
Swirling, spiralling, spilling over us
Is this how we want to live?
Buying, selling, swapping, changing
We surrender our lives to them.
Deep pockets, short arms
Some surrender more than others.
Originality is our lone defence
To the bombardment of products
Pantene, Peugeot, Pepsi-Max
The labels of our society
We spend and we spend
Does that make us better people?
The clothes, the shoes, the haircut, the car
It all adds up to nothing
An existence fading into the shadows
We’re always told what to do,
Who to be and what we want
But we need to break free
Free from the product pushing, moneymakers.
Brightly coloured and brilliantly hidden
We don’t see their faults.
They sell is things we’d never need
Just to satisfy their insatiable greed
Where have all the simple pleasures gone?
Dreams of walking along the beach, hand in hand,
Have been bombarded with products.
Sold out of their purity
Bright lights, flashy signs
Is the city a marvellous place?
Busy streets and bustling traffic
Trying to drag us in.
N.B. the title is a play on the words consumerism and consumption.

Writer Profile
Megan
I began writting as a way to relieve stress during times when i couldn't focus on any one thing at a time.
My poems are a new thing, i wrote how i feel about different things and how they seem through my eyes. I love to write shirt stories, poems and all sorts of things, its a good way for me to be able to speak my mind and vent that i'm feeling.
