"Technology is so much fun but we can drown in our technology. The fog of information can drive out knowledge." Daniel J. Boorstin is not the only person in the world who believes the above statement is true; I believe it as well. I don’t think there could be anything greater than technology, and how advanced we, as civilized human beings, have come in this world. From the wheel to steamboats to cars to computers to the internet, technology has driven the human race since the start of time. But, what happens when our technology becomes more advanced than us? This has always been a fear of mine, and I don’t have many fears. The United States is becoming lazier and lazier as we find easier ways to solve our every day problems. More and more people are going to work, sitting in front of a computer for 8 hours, coming home and sitting in front of the TV for another 8 hours until they fall asleep. They get up the next day, and repeat the process all over again. Myself, I spend most of my time sitting in front of the computer playing games, talking to friends and doing homework. But that doesn’t stop me from getting out, exercising, and having fun. I go out every Sunday with my friends and play at least 2 hours of backyard football (last week we played in 4 inches of snow). I didn’t start playing football until last fall, when I heard my friends were beginning to play. Ever since, I have not missed one football game; I’d give up 10 hours of online gaming in a warm, cozy house for 1 hour of football in the mud and rain. Living in Michigan, one of the fattest states of our country, I can say the problem isn’t getting much better locally either. I’d like to see many more people becoming more active and staying healthy. I’m not quite sure how to attack this problem of laziness in our country, but I’m sure there has got to be a way. The last thing I would like to see is 10 years into the future no one roaming the streets, no one outside living life. If I were to walk the streets then, there would probably be a fluorescent glow from almost every room in every house I had passed. Technology will always be fun, but there are better things to do in life. Yes technology can be fun, but I believe that if we stay shut out of the real world and what is happening around us, we won’t become better people. Remember, technology is here to support us, not here to succeed and surpass us. « return. |
