Many “old economy” industries are receiving these same benefits, however the oil industry is a typical example of this development. IT also allows other “old economy” industries to better monitor their processes and help produce the same amount of product for a smaller amount of energy and materials. As IT use continues to grow and environmental consciousness increases, new uses for IT in older forms of industry will be applied. This article has briefly summarized five major areas where IT has produced environmental benefits. This article concentrated on what benefits are presently being obtained. Significant discussions are ongoing throughout the world concerning growing populations and how to provide for these increasing needs and wants. Since IT uses both high-purity materials and higher quality energy (i.e., electricity) which in turn produce negative environmental impacts, its future uses must consider these effects. The development and use of more environmentally benign production methods and energy systems will likely allow IT to continue providing environmental benefits while allowing for enhanced economic opportunities for the world’s population.

Economics of IT (Information Techology) And Its Impact On The Environment Richard Paul | Dec 9th, 2001
A very thoughtful article on the state of technology and the environment. I would like to add to it in my own way in the future and talk about how automation design will also have an impact on environmental issues. Thanks Robert.
