Child Labour Pt.1: A cause or a consequence of poverty? Printable Version PRINTABLE VERSION
by Shimaa Shaaban, Egypt Jul 10, 2003

In Europe the case is not much different.

In Italy Roma children - who according to the Council of Europe are particularly vulnerable to economic exploitation - are smuggled into Italy from the former Yugoslavia to work as forced labourers in gangs where they are trained and then sold into crime rings in large cities. There is also concern about the number young Albanian girls being smuggled into Italy and forced into prostitution.

Actions by countries and communities will not be enough. Child labour is a global phenomenon. Therefore, global actions need to complement national and local initiatives to achieve maximum benefit for poor people throughout the world.
