Janneth was looking for practical work experience to compliment her academic studies when she decided to go on an AIESEC internship. She accepted a year-long position with a government agency, where she gained experience working in the import/export area.

Having studied International Relations at home in Mexico, Janneth did learn a bit about international trade in university, though import/export was not her main academic focus. Having the practical experience in this area, however, enabled her to find a link with what she wants to do later in her career.

Through her exchange experience, Janneth learned how businesses operate in Puerto Rico, and was able to compare how different this is to her home in Mexicio. Just as the culture was different, so was the business life, which was a pleasant surprise for Janneth.

“Its when you get to know the country culture and business culture that you really discover what its all about and experience culture shock—all the things that make the experience valuable.”

Having the opportunity to go to another country and gain work experience at the same time is something not many people have the chance to do, says Janneth, who did not have any working experience prior to her AIESEC internship. Now with one year of work experience under her belt, Janneth feels her skills are far ahead of other youth in her country.

“The fact that you are able to work in a different environment, negotiate with people from different backgrounds and improve your English, are all value-added elements for employers in Mexico,” says Janneth.
