He was a legend where I came from, always rapping or saxin' on the sax. Everyone called him Mistah beat because of his strong ability to play music. He was the coolest man on the block. I was walking to the ball court to see the potential NBA players in action. With an ice-cream cone in my hand, nothing made it sweeter than the rhythms that Mistah Beat was making. He was rapping with his friends, but he took the spotlight. His flow was hypnotizing, I was in a daze when he was rapping. His friends were bopping their heads to the groove, even the ball players and spectators crowded around to take in the music. I walked up to the crowd, slowly being drawn in, and then it happened...we locked eyes. He smiled, I smiled, and he pulled me in further into the crowd. As soon the crowd broke up. It was just him and me and the hip-hop music lingering in the air. He asked me my name, I gave it to him. Where I'm from, I told him. He asked me how I like his music, I told him that it takes me places that I've never been before, he offered...to take me on a date. Weeks went by, we went on our date. He said how he noticed me before and how he liked me, he said something about me was special, I'm not like most of the girls he sees. Those words never left my mind. A month later, the most devastating news came to me, Mistah Beat was shot and killed one, when I heard, It was like there was silence that fell upon me. It was just 3 days ago I last seen him, watching music videos and making music...now he's gone, forever. The funeral was full to capacity, who knew he was so popular?? I sang a song just for him, entitled "Something Special About You". Music was playing and people weren't mourning, they were celebrating his life, just how Mistah Beat himself would. A year later I moved away. Mistah Beat's mom gave me all of his mix-tapes before. I play them all the time and never get tired of them. I look up at the stars knowing Mistah Beat is watching me, I bet he is making some good music with his Maker right now. Play on, Mistah Beat, play on. « return. |
