Water is an essential cog in the wheel of life, otherwise put “water is life ” this is a challenge confronting migwani residents of nzauni location –mwingi distrct as they say when the cog creaks the wheel falters .A brief perusal in the history books of kaiveti dam dates back to the reign of Chief Kasina of migwani area who authoritatively supervised the residents to manually dig the dam which was a success during the colonial times thanks to our fathers and mothers sweat for a job well done.
A dam which was the life line of the locals now stands not even as a shadow of its former self it got silted and dissipated like dew in the early morning African sunshine – what remains of the former dam is a lake of sand but the sand is to Bazaar residents what Gold was to apartheid black South Africans it’s a curse in the eyes of the residents thanks to the greedy sand pirates and even a catchments forest which was flourishing near the dam has remained a forest of dry logs waiting for any broke charcoal burner to rest them in peace .
Narratives and folktales doing rounds indicate that funds have been allocated for the same dam through the CDF kitty ..Committees have been formed to oversee the same but they seem to be producing more heat than light for the way forward. Someone has the answers for all this controversy but let him/her know that he/she can run but cannot hide forever.
Miwani area needs more than 5 deep boreholes for the community in kanyaa, bazaar, nzauni areas for now we have a white elephant erected by the Christian child Fund – migwani its substandard and failed to meet its target of water supply but the locals are to blame for they silently watched as bride (borehole) was gang raped ,beaten and battered by the supervisors and local representatives of the chief financier based in the USA- they say man is bound in a starless midnight of corruption. I know he is not aware but they deserve Grammy awards under performance and abetting corruption.
I'm therefore appealing for the government of Kenya through the ministry of Water in collaboration with the Kenya army to de silt the kaiveti earth dam ,the private sector is welcome through the corporate social responsibility ,the safaricom foundation, eabl foundation, nakumatt holdings etc .But most importantly the Ministry of environment should liaise with the UNEP ,NEMA to prevent a catastrophe of environmental degradation slowly encroaching the dam plus many others through sand harvesting since we might as well witness case of North Eastern Province spreading to the semi arid Mwingi District .Since sand must be used the management of the sand should given to the many unemployed youth in the area to earn something and plough back part of the money for deforestation of the catchment area .
Please my fellow residents of nzauni location in migwani division,Mwingi District we must determine whether we are willing to dare the perils of rebirth…..i don’t want to see the day when we are rounded by our grand children and asked accusingly why didn’t we listen more carefully to the wisdom of our hearts as well to the rational analysis of our heads as wittingly put by Charles P A G Windsor.
