woman
(inspired by UN humanitarian, Simone Monasebian)

i failed in my promise
to shelter you
from life’s frailties –
may i never again have the privilege
of seeing you fall
like a tree
in the lonely cry of night

woman
with arms receiving our children
give me your compassion
give me a handful of blessings
and open my clenched fists –
this weapon i so unashamedly
and with so much anger use against you

a poet once wrote
too much fury fails the heart
let me make it plain:
the rain that is male is an angry rain
the rain that is female is the one that falls softly

woman
who in spite of everything
does nothing
to disturb this sinful silence
yet fighting gently like a rain
that softens the soil
to feed the fertile fields
and uncover the flower beneath the heart

woman
give me the wisdom to understand
the horror of my human error
turn this weapon into a wand of wisdom
allow me to take your hand
allow me to take my place as a man
and have the privilege of being your man
again
