This report analyzes young people's unique vulnerabilities to HIV and identifies young people as critical stakeholders in the development of effective HIV vaccines. Most young people have little or no access to sexual and reproductive health programs that provide them with the accurate information, services, skills, tools, and social support they need to protect themselves from HIV. This report looks at the legal, social, political, and biological barriers that prohibit young people from accessing services and resources that could save their lives. It also outlines ways in which an HIV vaccine is a critical prevention tool that will truly respond to the issues that make young people particularly vulnerable to HIV. Understanding this evidence, advocates, HIV vaccine researchers and developers, and policy makers should recognize the advantages of identifying young people as the target population for an HIV vaccine and take action now.
