She didn’t know
but
when you run
out
of
strength
you crawl.
Dawn.
scrabble in the dust
words spin and fall
rebel rabble rubble
what’s re-ta-li-a-tion?
Look.
wilted trees
sun-shadowed sky
blackened ash of pawns this
desert horizon
without pity.
cover up, girl.
don’t lie there.
if you fall
crawl.
Then:
explosion
grown numb to that
ten years ago
rip
the scabs that never heal.
scream
too parched to make a sound
All talk is fluff here.
rat-tat 1,2 bang-bang life always the same.
why?
Then:
explosion
closer than expected
rip
walls falling apart
scream
freedom?
Get up, child.
Get up now.
Can you still
crawl?
