As the rain fell,
Upon the shaft
A spiral blast
Shot through its hole…
It’s shinning in the rain!
De Blackman stood
As the rain fell
As the sun shown
He stood
A hoe on his right shoulder
On the other, a bundle of net…
It’s raining in the shine!
Behind him four figures
They stood with de Blackman
In the sunshine rain
Upon each head a bundle
Neatly packed… the
Rain fell, tears dropped
and the waters rose
Mixing mud into a puddle…
De Blackman turned,
Looked at his companions,
Saw raindrops course down
Their ashen faces,
Their bundles sodden,
Stamped through gears…
Burdened but placid,
Even as the world
Looked away with
mocking concern,
De Blackman smiled.
His eyes glowing
Like burning coal
His dropping snags
Spared no time for censor
As his warming white
Teeth stroked his tongue
Caressing lip after lip
De Blackman smiled again,
Again and again -
“‘Never say die!’
It shall be well…well…!”
