Poverty   Poetry

The hustle and bustle in the city
Hastening feet and smiles gritty
Dim to the clamour as copper scatters
Even when dulled by the tatters
Lining the old blue felt of his hat
Compassion had broke this stranger’s tread
“God bless you, dear lady”
And trust He will to it see
For my cards dealt on this hand
Entitles me blessings I may only lend
In the cheerful shrug of shoulders
Wrapped in new leathers
I learn how its warmth feels
Peering into a lit café
A secret witness as night steals day
And a bunch of red roses seals
Young lovers' passion
Mutual and knowing no ration
Happiness to go home to
From thinking of those other than you
Despair is the company only
For them who think lonely
For now, I bid farewell
My rare pal
And to my more regular companion
Hunger, and his comrade Seclusion
Rest assured as new days prevail
He will wake me up without fail.
