Sting Operations
First of all I would like to give a brief idea about what Sting Operations are.
In law enforcement a sting operation is an operation designed to catch a person committing a crime, by means of deception. A typical sting will have a law-enforcement officer or cooperative member of the public play a role as criminal partner or potential victim and go along with a suspect's actions to gather evidence of the suspect's wrongdoing.
• purchasing illegal drugs to catch a supplier
• posing as a client to catch a prostitute or pimp / escort agency
• posing as a prostitute to catch a client
If I would be given an opportunity to express my views on a recent event receiving major National and International attention I would not run far from mentioning Sting Operation carried out by India TV. It’s the much debated topic which is carrying a great deal of attention. The day India TV came out with the story about the Casting Couch in Bollywood (Bollywood : Bombay Film Industry) no doubt its TRP saw an immediate increase beating various news channels like Aajtak, Star News, Zee New. Only NDTV somehow managed getting least affected and was able to retain its viewership base. The motive behind India TV sting operations remains questionable and I do agree probably what India TV did was to attract new viewers and increase its TRP at least for the coming weeks. But if we take a look apart from the motive behind India TV TRP business we will find that at the end the Sting Operations carried in Bollywood benefited common man in knowing that the casting couch existed. It can be treated as a warning lesson to those people who dream about being a part a famous yet not so popular Bollywood industry. It’s necessary for every person to acknowledge true face behind renowned personalities, especially necessary for those people who possess extravagant dreams, the people who exploit others by making use of their money. Power and authority have the right to be exposed and should be punished for their deeds so as to spread the message clearly that who so ever repeat this will be strictly punished before the law reviving lost faith of people in constitution of our country.
If these operations will be recognized as the "Keeping Tom Approach" we will not lend justice to the operations. It no way invades the private life of people as media has no right to invade any person's private life. But it was not the case. The person was found in a hotel room along with a girl who pretended to be an aspiring actress and the facilitator has no right to ask her for sexual favour. If we support the accused by pitying his knowledge about the hidden camera and saying "Humans can make mistakes" then we will be sending across a wrong message to all especially to those people who dream of being a part of Bollywood that selling sex is the major criteria for getting job in Bollywood. By supporting the accused we will be doing injustice to the youth and all the people who want work in Bollywood. They will forcibly left with two options which would have more disastrous effect - either be bold and accept sexual favour or think of quitting the Industry.
Do not misunderstand me as the supporter of India TV as I totally agree that while carrying out any Sting Operation a code of decency should be followed and channels should stop using these operations for higher TRP ratings. These operations should be carried out keeping in the view for the welfare of the public. But still if these operations are carried out in order to increase TRP, truth of common man benefiting from it cannot be under looped. Anyhow, if channels will do these operations for getting TRP they will face this undeniable truth that this trend is a short term gain for the channels.
Ultimately its the quality of news coverage and content that will be able to hold viewers and ensure success.
So Best of Luck INDIA TV.
