The Millennium Development Goals are a very important project and are achievable if our government, non government organizations, youth and whole nation realize their importance, pay attention towards the goals, show sincerity and do the hard work needed. This is very hard indeed, but achievable.
Pakistan falls into the category of developing country and lacks in so many fields:
- Shortage of qualified doctors, specialist, educators, professionals
- Shortage of hospitals, medical centers
- Primary education is not available to all children
- Shortage of institutes and universities for higher education
- Abundance of jobless people
- Lack of infrastructure / technology
- And many more
But, in spite of this, Pakistan is progressing rapidly and has already achieved some milestones in many fields and I am sure Pakistan will be able to become a healthy and wealthy nation in near future. Perhaps, Pakistan shall not be able to cover all of the MDG’s - but can cover at least 5 Goals.
The Millennium Development Goals are a very important project from the perspective of the future of Pakistan, but the government is not doing anything to provide awareness to people. Very few people know anything about the MDGs.
By this you can easily understand the current situation in Pakistan of the MDG campaign and how much additional attention is required to spread the message of the MDGs. In Pakistan, the majority of the peoples live below the standard line of poverty and have their own social problems. People don’t want to think about such long-term plans as the MDGs. I talk some people about it, but most say it is much more important for them to think what will happen in the coming year instead of thinking about MDGs in the long-term.
70% of Pakistan’s population lives in villages where there is no technology, Internet, infrastructure, schools or even electricity, gas and phone facilities available! So in this context, how can people think about MDG? It becomes very important for government to inform people about the MDGs.
Now the question arises what myself and other youths can do to achieve the MDGs.
I have so many ideas and have been implementing some. I am moderator of many web-based groups and I already have sent MDG Kits to my friends, relatives, members of government, emphasizing their importance. Through this, I have conveyed the message of the MDGs to at least thousands of young people - and I am getting a very good response.
If I get support from my center, I have intentions to organize a seminar on the MDGs. I am sure I’ll be able to get support from my center management. I have intentions to send my ideas and emphasize the MDGs importance to Government, through our Parliamentarians. In this regard, I will soon contact them through emails.
Pakistan lacks in many fields and we need full support from Developed countries in order to achieve the MDGs. I have intentions to send some proposals to developed countries’ government officials and youth - and I hope to get a good response from them too!
I have intentions to convey the MDGs message in newspapers and magazines through my writings. And I’ll start soon. One more good suggestion that just arrived in my mind is that I should send MDG Kits to leading newspapers, magazine Editors and request them to write on the importance of the MDGs, forcing their readers to think seriously about it.
I expect good things from my country’s youth: that they’ll realize the importance of the MDGs and will try their best to not only spread the message of the MDGs but work hard as well to make them happen.
I 100% agree, we are the 1st generation that can achieve the MDGs and can make the world more secure, beautiful and better for everyone. BUT here I want to make one thing clear: The MDGs are not achievable for all. The reason behind this is developed countries. Let me give you some examples.
Currently, developed countries are ‘destructing’ Iraq, Kashmir, Palestine, Afghanistan and many other places. These people and countries certainly will not be able to achieve the MDGs because the only support they have from developed countries are in terms of attacks, bombardment, and destruction! Rather than terms of funding, technology, tools etc. It is so sad! In this situation, how can Iraq, Kashmir and Afghanistan’s peoples think about MDGs?
I think it is the moral responsibility of the developed countries to help affected countries.
Perhaps all affected countries will take at least 20-25 years to achieve MDG.
As far as UN’s role is concerned, currently the UN is not in position to do anything. It all depends on developed countries’ and whether they want to attack on any country they chose. They don’t need permission. They have their own rules.
Similarly, if developed countries wanted to help achieve the MDGs they could do so very easily - I think within 5 years. If we were able to achieve the MDGs, then definitely there would be no developing or third world countries and all countries would have similar facilities. This may not be beneficial for developed countries. Where will they outsource business?
