Fractured World Printable Version PRINTABLE VERSION

We have shut out the sun, drawing bars of shadow- blinds.
And inside, we light our home in
Hard electricity.

We close the windows, block the summer breeze,
Turn up the air conditioning,
Listen to cruel music.

We communicate. Isolated.
Speaking through keystrokes,
Feeling through icons.

We live in speed. Travel in sleek metal vehicles,
Staying on smooth black asphalt.
Avoiding footpaths.

Bottled water from northern Europe. Fresh fruit from South America.
Packages of salad and frozen meals, disposable dishcloths,
Plastic toys, idols screaming on television,
Ridged clipped grass, video games,
Cell phones recharging,
Our world.

But out on the prairie,
The sun’s orange light caresses
A grasshopper as it struggles to climb
A strand of stormy grass.
