Welcome to the Dispatch

This month TakingITGlobal's theme is Work and Economics, an important topic that shapes all of our lives and the world around us. The economic system which dominates our world often means that hard work does not always improve a person's economic status. Economic status is often determined by social, cultural or political factors like education, health, equality, and opportunity. Important issues related to Work and Economics are continually being addressed throughout the TakingITGlobal site.

World Population Day

On July 11th TakingITGlobal joined communities, individuals and organizations all over the world in recognizing World Population Day! The theme for this year's World Population Day was 'Men at Work', this theme focuses on men's involvement in women's lives. Often men play a prominent role in women's reproductive rights, whether it is a father deciding when his daughter will marry, or an employer deciding whether a pregnant woman can continue working. These decisions effect population growth, and this year's World Population Day aims to make men more aware of their role in the reproductive rights and health of women and girls, as well as working to make their involvement positive and beneficial for the women in their lives.

Images of the Global Workforce

Images of Global Workforce The nature of work is always changing, as new jobs emerge and old ones fade away. The global workforce is more flexible, mobile and varied than ever before. Indian telecom workers answer phone calls from Europe, while Mexican migrant labourers travel as far north as Canada to find seasonal work. The current Global Gallery collection 'Images of the Global Workforce' captures images of our global workforce from the perspective of TakingITGlobal members: Click here!

Submit your artwork to this collection. Don't forget to select "Images of the Global Workforce" in the "Add to Collection" dropdown

Global Gallery Contest: Recognizing the Resistance of Indigenous Peoples

Throughout history the indigenous peoples of the world have continually resisted threats to their cultures and existence. This Global Gallery contest is about recognizing the history of resistance and struggle that is part of each indigenous group's experience, as well as recognizing the struggles that are still on-going. We encourage the participation of TIG members who are part of an indigenous group, as well as those who are not. Learn more about the contest here!

Panorama Issue: Child Labour

Panorama Issue: Child Labour More than 200 million children in the world today are involved in child labour, doing work that is damaging to his or her mental, physical and emotional development. Children work because their survival and that of their families depend on it. Child labour persists even where it has been declared illegal. For this issue of Panorama TakingITGlobal members shared their thoughts on the topic of Child Labour. Read the current issue here!

For more information on the practice of child labour check out the "SCREAM Stop Child Labour" campaign, an initiative of the International Labour Organization (ILO), which aims to inform youth about child labour so that they in their turn can speak out on behalf of child labourers everywhere.

For the next issue of Panorama we are looking for submissions on Human Security, as part of our up-coming theme Peace, Conflict and Governance. Human Security is a new way of approaching security at the local, national and global levels which focuses on the security of people rather than the security of states. How do youth like their news?

How do youth like their news? Youth Media DNA Report: Decoding Youth as News & Information Consumers

Over time newspaper readership amongst young people has been declining. This led media experts to wonder - Are youth interested in news? How does technology affect their daily consumption? In 2006 The World Association of Newspapers enlisted D-CODE, research consultancy focused on youth, to research improved strategies for reaching and delivering news to young readers locally and globally. TakingITGlobal assisted in the hiring of Country Leaders in Columbia, Japan, Lebanon, the Philippines, Serbia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, the United Kingdom and the United States. Country Leaders recruited youth from all of these places to confirm or challenge 5 different hypotheses regarding youth readership of newspapers.

The important report that followed will be part of assessing how youth consume news globally, and formulating strategies to engage them. Check out the finished product here!
